A beginner’s guide to understanding odds at crypto sportsbooks and casinos.

Odds Represent Probability

Odds tell you two things:

  1. How likely an event is to happen
  2. How much you’ll win if it does

Odds Formats

Decimal Odds (Most Common in Crypto)

Used by most crypto sportsbooks. The number represents your total return per unit bet.

Odds Meaning $10 Bet Pays
1.50 You get $15 back ($5 profit) $15
2.00 You double your money $20
3.50 You get 3.5x your bet $35
10.00 You get 10x your bet $100

Formula: Profit = (Stake × Odds) - Stake

Fractional Odds (Traditional UK Format)

Shows your profit relative to your stake.

Odds Meaning $10 Bet Profit
1/2 Win $1 for every $2 bet $5
1/1 (Evens) Win $1 for every $1 bet $10
5/2 Win $5 for every $2 bet $25

American Odds (US Format)

Uses + and - signs. Positive = underdog, Negative = favorite.

Odds Meaning
+200 Bet $100 to win $200 profit
-150 Bet $150 to win $100 profit

House Edge

Every casino game has a built-in mathematical advantage for the house. This is called the house edge:

Game Typical House Edge
Blackjack 0.5-2%
Roulette (European) 2.7%
Baccarat 1.06-1.24%
Slots 2-10%
Crash Games 1-4%
Dice Games 1-2%

RTP (Return to Player)

RTP is the inverse of house edge. A game with 97% RTP gives back $97 for every $100 wagered, on average, over millions of bets.

  • RTP above 96% is considered good
  • RTP below 94% is below average

Remember: Odds represent long-term mathematical expectations. In the short term, anything can happen - that’s what makes gambling exciting (and risky).
